PHOENIX _ The San Diego Padres arrived Monday at Chase Field needing, in all likelihood, more than a few runs to upset their hosts.
They got them late, if better than never. The Arizona Diamondbacks, however, had already collected theirs.
In a 7-6 loss, the Padres' rally fell just short. Long before Wil Myers pummeled a three-run drive in the seventh and Austin Hedges deposited a solo shot in the seats, the D-backs put some devastating swings on baseballs thrown by Jhoulys Chacin, whose continued home-road disparity proved too much to overcome.
If not for a couple of well-timed cuts, the Padres right-hander might have turned in a respectable performance. The D-backs' opportunism, however, resulted in a drubbing.
Over six innings, Chacin surrendered seven runs on eight hits, including two fence-clearers. David Peralta homered with one out in the first. Chris Owings did the same in the fourth _ with two outs and the bases loaded, for his first career grand slam. Both D-backs redirected the first pitch they saw.
After recording the final out of the sixth, Chacin made a slow walk to the dugout, as if attempting to digest what had just transpired. Monday's drubbing was not the first of his season.
At Petco Park, Chacin has not allowed a run in 14 2/3 innings.
On the road, he has allowed 19 in 14 1/3 innings.
While he struggled, so did his offense. Zack Greinke flummoxed the Padres' young lineup, striking out 11. He did not permit a run until the sixth, when Hedges lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
In the seventh, with Greinke out of the game, the Padres broke through. They loaded the bases with no outs. Manuel Margot legged out a fielder's choice, preventing a double play while a run scored. Myers hooked a drive inside the left-field foul pole. Suddenly, the Padres trailed by just two.
In the eighth, Hedges continued his recent tear. The catcher's latest home run was his sixth in nine games, pulling the Padres to within one score.
The rally stopped there. In the top of the ninth, Margot was beat out on an infield chopper, Myers struck out and Yangervis Solarte lined out, ending the game.
