CJ Abrams' future is on hold.
Abrams, the San Diego Padres' top positional prospect, will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a fractured left tibia and a sprained MCL.
The 20-year-old shortstop was helped off the field Wednesday after a ninth-inning collision at second base at Double-A San Antonio.
Earlier that day, Abrams was selected to represent the Padres in the All-Star Futures Game alongside catcher Luis Campusano.
The expected recovery period is three months, which could allow Abrams to return to action during the fall instructional league.
Abrams is No. 8 in MLB.com's top-100 prospects rankings and No. 2 in the Padres organization behind left-hander MacKenzie Gore.
The sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft, Abrams was the rookie-level Arizona League MVP the summer after that draft before losing 2020 to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Padres invited him to the alternate site that summer and then to big-league spring training before challenging Abrams with a promotion to Double-A San Antonio in May.
There, Abrams was hitting .296/.363/.420 with two homers, 23 RBIs and 13 steals in 42 games. He'd walked 15 times against 36 strikeouts.
