Padres' Nix 'too intoxicated' to explain actions, according to arrest report

Padres pitcher Jacob Nix "was too intoxicated" to explain why he attempted to enter a home near the team's spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., through a doggy door shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, according to the arrest report.

Nix, 23, is facing two counts of criminal trespassing. He has a preliminary court hearing scheduled for Oct. 16.

Tom Cosgrove, a minor league pitcher in the Padres system, was also arrested, but it was not clear if he was charged.

According to the report provided by the Peoria Police Department, Cosgrove told police that he and Nix had been drinking in Scottsdale when they decided to split a Uber back to Nix's residence.

Nix reportedly told Police he was "too (expletive) up" to realize he was not entering his home when the homeowner confronted Nix as he crawled through a doggy door entrance through the backyard.

Nix _ who was kicked in the face by the homeowner, Tasered and arrested a short while later after Cosgrove pulled him from the doggy door _ acknowledged to officers that he did not have any animals at his home, nor did he have a doggy door.

Nix, according to the report, also told officers that he could not explain why he would not have attempted to use his keys to enter the home through the front door. Cosgrove told officers he was following Nix.

The arresting documents said a portable breath test administered to both Nix and Cosgrove registered for alcohol consumption. Both also appeared inebriated to the arresting officers, according to the report.

Nix had been pitching for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League this month. He missed all of 2019 after sustaining a UCL tear in spring training in his attempt to make the Padres' Opening Day roster. Nix opted for rest and rehab over Tommy John surgery and appeared on the verge of a September call-up when he experienced shoulder discomfort after he was hit hard in a rehab start in the Texas League Championship Series while with Double-A Amarillo.

Nix made his MLB debut in 2018 and posted a 7.02 ERA in nine starts.

Cosgrove, who had a brace on his left elbow at the time of his arrest, underwent Tommy John surgery last month. He was a 12th-round pick out of Manhattan in 2017. Cosgrove has not advanced past high Single-A Lake Elsinore.
