Padres game postponed after Mariners vote not to play in social injustice protest

SAN DIEGO _ The Padres' game against the Mariners will not be played Wednesday night at Petco Park, as Mariners players voted to join the protest of the shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake, by police in Wisconsin.

Padres players agreed to a postponement.

Earlier Wednesday, the NBA postponed all its playoffs games scheduled for Wednesday after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court for the game against the Orlando Magic.

The Milwaukee Brewers decided shortly after that not to play their game against the Cincinnati Reds.

As that news was breaking, Padres manager Jayce Tingler was holding his regularly scheduled news conference and said he knew of no plans for the game here not to be played.

At about the same time, Mariners players who had been working out departed the Petco Park field for a meeting. A short while later, Mariners manager Scott Servais emerged and sought out Tingler.

A series of on-field meetings ensued, including one between Padres player rep Austin Hedges, Manny Machado and Tommy Pham and three members of the Mariners, identified by a writer who covers the Seattle club as Shed Long, Marco Gonzales and Kyle Seager.

The Mariners have seven Black players, the most of any team in Major League Baseball.
