Padres game against Guardians rescheduled due to rain

CLEVELAND — The Padres and Guardians still hope to play two games this week at Progressive Field. Both games will just have to be Wednesday.

An expected thunderstorm caused Tuesday's game to be postponed and rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader beginning at 10:10 a.m. PT Wednesday.

Mike Clevinger, who was going to start Tuesday, will open the first game Wednesday.

"I don't know if he'd be able to wait around for the second game," Padres manager Bob Melvin said.

Clevinger, who played in Cleveland from 2016 until he was traded to the Padres in 2020, said he has had this date circled on his calendar since the schedule came out.

Not only will he be facing his former team, this will be Clevinger's first start since the National League Division Series in 2020. He had Tommy John surgery in November of that year, spent last year rehabilitating his elbow and spent the first 2 1/2 weeks of the season on the injured list with a sprained right knee.

The rain forecast here Wednesday is scheduled to pass by late in the morning.

Clevinger is scheduled to face former teammate Zach Plesac. The second game will match rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore against former Padres right-hander Cal Quantrill.

The Padres certainly hope to get both games in. Unlike the past two seasons, when Major League Baseball's COVID health and safety protocols allowed for postponed games to be made up in the ballpark of what was supposed to be the visiting team, MLB has returned to making up games at the originally scheduled ballpark in 2022.
