SAN DIEGO _ Fernando Tatis Jr. showed a glimpse of his rare brilliance.
Manny Machado will wait for another day to show all he's got.
On the kind of beautiful afternoon San Diego is known for but the Padres are not, a couple holdovers provided the impetus for the Padres' first victorious Opening Day since 2014.
Eric Lauer out-dueled Madison Bumgarner, and Wil Myers drove in both Padres runs in a 2-0 victory over the Giants, as those who packed Petco Park, drenched in sun but not the visiting team's colors, cheered in ways they rarely have.
Myers, the first Padres player ever to make an Opening Day start at a fourth different position, homered in the third inning and hit a line-drive single to score Ian Kinsler from second base in the sixth.
Lauer took just 70 pitches to get through six innings, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out three.
He picked off Bumgarner at first base to end the fifth inning. The top of the sixth inning ended when Myers fielded Evan Longoria's line drive off the wall in the left-field corner, turned and fired a throw to second base, where Kinsler dropped the tag just in time.
Green proceeded to pull the levers on his deep bullpen.
After Trey Wingenter allowed an infield single and got the first out of the seventh, Green called on left-hander Aaron Loup to face pinch-hitter Gerardo Parra. Loup got a weak grounder from Parra before Green came out again and summoned Craig Stammen to face pinch-hitter Yangervis Solarte. Another grounder to second ended the threat.
Stammen pitched a perfect eighth inning. Kirby Yates, in his first full season as the Padres' closer after finishing last season in the role, earned the save with a perfect ninth.
Tatis finished his MLB debut 2 for 3 with two singles, while Machado ended his Padres debut hitless with two strikeouts in three at-bats.
