Padraig Harrington wants LIV stars to play in Ryder Cup

Padraig Harrington wants LIV stars to play in this year's Ryder Cup in Rome.

With the event just two months away, the status of LIV players remains uncertain. For both team USA and team Europe, the insinuation since players jumped ship was that LIV players would not be considered for selection.

For team USA, that stance has become complicated given Brooks Koepka's PGA Championship win has propelled him into automatic qualification.

The issue might be easier for Team Europe captain Luke Donald to deal with as a number of former European players resigned from the European Tour earlier this year rendering them ineligible for the Ryder Cup.

Speaking to Bunkered, 2021 Team Europe captain Harrington revealed that he would like to see LIV players play at the event later this year.

"I think the Ryder Cup is going to have the LIV players back. They definitely warrant consideration. They’re good players. To suggest there aren’t players capable of being Ryder Cup players over at LIV would be silly.

“A couple of them are at the stage [where] it [might be] their last hurrah, but not all of them for sure. Luke’s got to pick his best team at the end of the day.”

One issue with picking LIV players could be the tension that it would create between LIV stars and players who remained loyal to the PGA and European Tour.

Harrington doesn't see it as a stumbling block however and explained how players put their issues to one side when it's Ryder Cup season.

"For a week, you get over it, Myself and Sergio (Garcia) used to hug at the Ryder Cup. When you are playing you get over these things, and you work through it. You would be surprised – a bit of tension does help, and you want a bit of drive in there.
