Padraig Harrington ready to host Irish Open - but it might not be next year

Padraig Harrington has revealed he has held discussions about hosting the Irish Open next year - but admits it's complicated as he's got another job as Europe's Ryder Cup skipper.

Harrington is part of a five-man rota that will host the tournament after previous host Rory McIlroy decided he couldn't fulfil the role exclusively after a four-year stint.

McIlroy remains on the rota along with Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley, with the latter hosting in Lahinch this week.

It's rumoured that Harrington could be the man to host next year at a venue still to be decided.

But, as he is European's captain for the next Ryder Cup on American soil at Whistling Straits in 2020, that could be problematic.

"I'm part of the rota, there's five of us in at the moment and if Shane (Lowry) wins a major, maybe we'll have six on it pretty soon," said Harrington this afternoon.

"Look, we've got great people to host an Irish Open and I want to give out that guy McGinley, he keeps overdoing it with the work and making it harder for everybody following him.

"He's gone all out with this Irish Open and the expectations will just get higher after him, just like the Ryder Cup.

"I would love to host one in the future - I'm going to, I'm on the list."

As for the possibility of it happening in 2020, Harrington commented: "Certainly it's being talked about, we're discussing it at the moment.

"It's a possibility but nothing has been....there's more things that have to be confirmed before, it really does come down to where we're going and what's the sponsor's fund.

"But you can be assured that I will be hosting the Irish Open in the next number of years, it just mightn't be next year.

"It will come down to timings and venues and a lot comes down to the sponsor, and making decisions about getting the right venue and then the right person for that venue to do that.

"So there's a lot of things that go into it, but I will sure hope to host one in the future".
