Paddy McNair will serve a three-match suspension after the FA rejected Middlesbrough's appeal over his straight red card against Swansea last Saturday.
The 24-year-old was shown red after appearing to elbow Swansea’s Matt Grimes late in the game, a decision which reduced Boro to nine men following Marcus Browne’s sending off.
McNair will now miss Boro's next three games against Stoke, Huddersfield, and West Brom.
The midfielder has been one of the standout performers for Middlesbrough as they have struggled for form this season, currently sitting 20th in the Championship.
Boro manager Jonathan Woodgate said after the whistle: “Paddy's is not a red in my view, but no complaints over Marcus Browne's.
"We'll definitely be appealing Paddy's. That is a yellow card in my view.”
Middlesbrough take on Michael O'Neill's Stoke City in their next match on Friday night at the Riverside Stadium in a crucial clash at the bottom of the Championship table.
