Paddy McNair agrees new long-term contract with Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock says he wants to build a team around Paddy McNair after the versatile defender agreed a new long-term contract with the club.

The Northern Ireland international's new deal will run until the summer of 2024.

McNair - who still had 18 months remaining on his previous contract - has impressed for Boro this season.

The former Manchester United defender moved to the Riverside in June 2018 and is closing in on 100 appearances for the Championship club.

“It’s another step in the right direction for the club,” said manager Neil Warnock.

“We want to almost build a team around Paddy. He has excelled this season, and he’s loving every minute of it.

"It took him two seconds to agree to a new contract which I thought was fantastic.

“I’m absolutely delighted and this is another important step for the club for the future.”

Warnock is a big fan of McNair, and has previously compared him to German legend Franz Beckenbauer.
