Paddy McIlvenny death: Tributes paid to GAA stalwart and 'committed Gael'

Tributes have been paid to Belfast GAA stalwart Paddy McIlvenny following his death from Covid-19.

Mr McIlvenny, 62, served on the committee of the South Antrim GAA and was a former bar manager at the Casement Club.

He was also a senior club championship winner with St Teresa's GAC and later helped St Agnes in reach division one of the all-county football league.

It is understood Mr McIlvenny passed away on Tuesday night.

Antrim GAA said: "Paddy is a former bar manager at Casement Social Club and he also served the South Antrim divisional board as its secretary.

"He will be sadly missed at games and in the committee room, but always fondly remembered by everyone connected with his club and the wider GAA in Antrim.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Christine, sons, daughters and entire family circle at this sorrowful time."

Casement Social Club added in a statement: "It is with deep sadness and regret that the Committee and members learn of the death of former bar manager Paddy McIlvenny.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Christine, sons Martin and Stephen, and daughter Carolyn and entire family circle at this sad time."

Meanwhile, the committee and members of Lámh Dhearg CLG also expressed their "sincere sympathy" to Mr McIlvenny's family following his passing.

"Paddy was a true gentleman and a committed Gael. He will be sadly missed by the local GAA community," the Belfast club said in a statement.

"It was always a pleasure in dealing with Paddy in his various administration roles within South Antrim.

"Paddy had a strong affinity with our club, he proudly and passionately followed and supported the careers of his nephews Mark, Conor and Karl. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time .

"May Paddy rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

North Belfast MP and former Sinn Féin Lord Mayor John Finucane added on Twitter: "Paddy was not only a great Gael, but an absolute gentleman too and will be sorely missed. Thoughts with all the McIlvenny family at this difficult time."
