Paddy McGuinness sparks passionate debate after revealing how he eats his scones

Paddy McGuinness sparked a passionate discussion after he shared how he likes to eat his scones.

The age-old debate over how to serve the snack, with cream or jam first, was reignited by the Top Gear presenter who posted a video of his cream tea on Instagram.

The video showed the Bolton TV star slathering on the cream followed by a dollop of jam.

"Cream first, then jam, always! #scones #cream #jam #sunday," he wrote.

And he was met with a flood of views from both camps.

"Yes lad!!!!" agreed one follower in the cream team.

"Agreed, no argument!!" said another.

TV presenter and former Strictly Come Dancing champ Ore Oduba cried: "Thank the lord Paddy!!! We in the 'cream THEN jam' brigade can’t afford to lose another soldier!"

"ALWAYS CREAM THEN JAM," shouted another follower.

"If it's jam first you totally lose the flavour of the jam!" explained one.

And another reasoned: "The cream is like the butter."

But those in the jam camp were just as vociferous.

"No no no! Jam first!!" exclaimed one.

"All kinds of wrong! Jam first! The Cornish way" said another.

"Look how hard it is to spread jam on top of cream!" argued another.

And another scolded: "Jam first cream second Paddy how can u not know this?"

Another follower threw a curveball when they said: "Paddy. Those aren’t scones."

But he was backed by another fan who explained there was such a thing as square scones.

And another asked: "What happened to the butter never mind the fact you've put cream before jam!!! Criminal!!"

The cream tea is a speciality of Devon and Cornwall which dates back to the 11th century.

Traditionally those from Devon put the cream on the scone first then the jam, while the Cornish prefer the jam first.

It was previously reported that the Queen prefers jam first according to a former chef who worked for the royal family.

But bakers at iconic tea rooms such as Betty’s Tea Rooms say there’s no hard and fast rule.
