Paddy McGuinness joins Vernon Kay for most Boltonian picture after 'blunder' at Wembley Stadium

Bolton-raised telly favourites were reunited as they watched Bolton Wanderers' 4-0 triumph over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley Stadium. Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay were cheering in the stands as their heroes lifted the Papa John’s Trophy.

Top Gear and Question of Sport presenter Paddy, 49, and new BBC Radio 2 mid-afternoon host Vernon, 48, grinned for a picture with former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Ivan Campo on Sunday (April 2). Sharing the joy-filled picture on his Instagram Paddy exclaimed: "What a day!!! I’ve been there for the losses so this feels all the more sweeter."

And he added to the League One teams: "Massive congratulations to everyone at @officialbwfc. Commiserations @only1argyle no doubt you’ll go on to win the league. #boltonwanderers #bwfc."

One follower loulaa99 remarked to a fellow Instagrammer: "The only thing missing to make this photo more Boltonian is you being in it @riabolton8." And globucs commented: "Aw campo love him , two great Bolton fans too."

Paddy captured a video of himself frustrated at the match after he ended up in the wrong end. "Only got stuck on the Argyle side," he said into the camera as he walked along. And added to show his exasperation: "F***ing hell."

But he was in a happier mood as he headed home after the game. Expanding more on what had happened he said he was in the wrong end during the first half. "I was only in the Plymouth end and in the second half I got in the Bolton end with the Bolton fans. What a Sunday," he beamed.

He told his followers: "On my way back home. What a day, what a game. I was there nigh on 36 years when we got beat in the Freight Rover against Bristol City. I was there for that long journey. That one was at the old Wembley.

And he added about his past experiences watching Bolton at Wembley "I was at the 5-0 battering that Stoke gave us. That was another gutter. That's why today feels all the more sweeter."

In 2021 Vernon and Paddy starred together in an ad for n TransPennine Express and the pair reflected on growing up in Bolton. "When I was a young lad, it felt like Manchester was the centre of the world then," Paddy told Vernon. "Because it had blown up with all Happy Mondays and what have you. Then Afflecks Palace was the place to go. So then you get the train there and go and buy your Kangol hat and stuff like that, and them necklaces with a map of Africa".

Vernon, who was a finalist on I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020, will take over Ken Bruce's show from next month after the depature of the radio icon after 31 years at Radio 2. Vernon, who is celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary to Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly later this year, is known for fronting various shows including All Star Family Fortunes, Just The Two Of Us, and Beat The Star. He presented his own BBC Radio 1 show between 2004 and 2012 and another on Radio X between 2015 and 2017.

Vernon became emotional when reflecting on the support he has received after announcing he will replace veteran broadcaster Ken. Appearing on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show last month Vernon said: "My dad is a lorry driver and I said this when I joined Radio 2 and started standing in for Steve Wright, so we’ve always had Radio 2 on in the background.

"It is part of us, it is in our DNA – Ken Bruce is mid-mornings. You don’t think of any other DJ when you think of that slot. Whatever channel you choose to listen to, whoever is on mid-mornings, it’s the Ken Bruce slot. He has made it his own and he is an absolute legend of broadcasting.

"To be asked to step into those big shoes… it was a big deep breath, I’ll be honest with you. Obviously, I am over the moon and so are my parents and Tess and the kids, but it’s the Ken Bruce show and the man has raised the bar so high that I’m just so excited to be able to take the reins. I am absolutely over the moon, I really am."
