Top Gear host Paddy McGuinness lost control of and crashed a Lamborghini worth £250,000 while filming the show.

The 46-year-old presenter was testing the Lamborghini Diablo before the smash in the Yorkshire Dales near Ribblehead on Tuesday.

Paramedics and police were on hand to help him after he crashed the vehicle, which is capable of speeds of more than 200 miles an hour.

A source told the Sun the crash "could have been a lot worse."

"Paddy is fine but a bit shaken as anyone would be when having a scare at speed," they said.

"There's always paramedics and police on a Top Gear shoot so he was in good hands for a once-over, but he's smiling as ever."

The dad-of-three shared an update on his Instagram explaining "torrential rain" had played a part in the crash.

"It's been a mad old day on Top Gear today - you might have seen that I've had bit of a shunt," he said.

"I finally got to drive one of my fantasy childhood cars, the Lamborghini Diablo but it turns out 30 odd year old supercars don't like torrential rain - who'd have thought?

"If you've ever owned a Diablo, or you've driven one, you'll know just as well as me, oh my god, she can be a cruel mistress.

"That V12 lulls you in and all of a sudden, bites you like that but I'm totally fine and fingers crossed, we get the car up and running again because it's an absolute beauty."

Police said a Roads Policing Group Officer became aware of the incident while patrolling the route which often has a high number of serious and fatal collisions.

After the crash the vehicle was seen covered by a tarp in the field.

A BBC spokesman said: “During Top Gear filming in North Yorkshire today presenter Paddy McGuinness’s car skidded and left the road, coming to an almost immediate stop.

"Paddy was quickly taken to the production unit base for medical checks and is unhurt.

"No other vehicles were involved and the Police, who had been monitoring filming, were quickly on the scene to assist.

"Safety on Top Gear is always the production team’s priority and the vehicle’s speed at the time was within the road’s limit of 60mph.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman added: "Police attended a collision involving a Lamborghini Diablo, which crashed into a field after the driver lost control on the B6255 near Ribblehead.

Last year Top Gear presenter Freddie Flintoff was driving a super-fast three-wheel vehicle when he veered off the runway in a filmed stunt for the BBC motoring programme.

The former England cricketer escaped unscathed and said he returned to filming the next day.

Richard Hammon has survived two high speed crashes while filming for Top Gear.

The 37-year-old - nicknamed The Hamster - was shunted off Silverstone's famous track by a fellow driver in 2007 while driving a Bugatti Veyron at speeds at more than 100mph.
