Paddy Barnes urged to quit boxing by Sean McComb after latest loss

Sean McComb has urged “Irish legend” Paddy Barnes to quit boxing after his latest defeat.

Barnes was outgunned by Jay Harris before being stopped in the fourth round of their IBF Inter-Continental Flyweight title fight on Friday night.

Barnes touched the canvas twice after being floored by punishing body shots from his Welsh opponent.

It leaves the 32-year-old at a crossroads in his career.

Friday’s defeat was Barnes’ third in his nine professional fights to date, all three losses coming in his last four bouts.

“If I was to give him advice, I would tell Paddy to get out. Get out of the sport,” McComb told iFLTV.

“He is a three-time Olympian. He is an Irish legend. No boxer has ever gone to three Olympics with Ireland.

“He has represented Ireland for over a decade at the top level. He has two Olympic bronze medals, two Commonwealth medals, two European medals, he was WSB World champion in the amateurs.

“He has done it all in the amateurs, and he is a legend for that alone.

“You have the likes of Carl Frampton who is a legend in the pro game, but not the amateurs.

“My advice to Paddy would be to get out, get a job and live the good life.”

McComb - who rooms with Barnes during training camp - added: “I am gutted for Paddy. I share a room with him and live with him every day.

“I cook his food and everything else.

“I am sure he will take a break over Christmas and take stock of what he wants to do.”
