Paddy Barnes lands new job less than a week after retiring

Paddy Barnes has landed a new job with the Irish Athletic Boxing Association.

The 32-year-old has been appointed Club Development Officer for Ulster within IABA.

It comes less than a week after the three-time Olympian .

IABA said on Tuesday: "Paddy Barnes has joined as Club Development Officer for the IABA in Ulster.

"Paddy has been involved in the sport of boxing for many years as a boxer with Holy Family BC in Belfast. He has won numerous Co Antrim, Ulster and All Ireland titles, as well as representing Ireland on the world stage.

"Paddy is a three time Olympian (2008, 2012, 2016), 2-time Olympic Bronze Medallist (2008 & 2012), WSB Champion (2015), two-time European Medallist (Gold 2010, Silver 2013) and also two-time Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist for Northern Ireland (2010 & 2014).

"Paddy is also a level 2 qualified coach and has a wealth of boxing experience.

"He will work closely with IABA affiliated clubs across Ulster to advise and provide guidance in their club setting."

Barnes called time on his career after nine pro fights, but enjoyed a stellar amateur career which saw him win bronze medals at the Beijing and London Olympic Games.

The 32-year-old also won gold at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and won European Elite gold and silver.

Speaking last week, Barnes said: “I have absolutely no regrets.

"As a professional, I wanted to fight the best straight away and test myself. I was given every opportunity to show how good I was. I failed but that’s sport – at least I tried.

“Looking back on my career, I think my greatest achievement was winning gold at the European Championships back in 2010.”
