Paddleboarders rescued by lifeboat crews after getting stranded at Hartley Bay

Two paddleboarders had to be rescued by lifeboat crews after getting into difficulty off the coast of Hartley Bay.

A volunteer crew from Blyth RNLI were attending Seaton Sluice Harbour Day on Saturday with the D-Class inshore lifeboat when they were called into action at around 4pm.

The lifeboat was launched with three crew members on board and made the short trip to Hartley Bay where the paddleboarders were found struggling to make their way back to shore due to the strong offshore wind.

Teaming up with Cullercoats RNLI , the two casualties were rescued and taken back to Seaton Sluice Harbour.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also called by HM Coastguard but their assistance in the end was not required.

Blyth RNLI Helm Adam Pickering said: "The strong offshore wind had made it difficult for the paddleboarders to make it back to shore.

"We made the short distance from Seaton Sluice Harbour and found the casualties quickly who were thankful for our assistance.

"It was a good outcome."

The incident comes just a week after lifeguards rescued a mother and her eight-year-old son who had drifted out to sea on an inflatable paddleboard off Seaburn beach.

As part of their Respect the Water Campaign, the RNLI offer safety advice for paddleboarders at https://rnli.org/safety/choose-your-activity/stand-up-paddle-boarding
