Paddle boarder with no safety equipment who 'should have observed the lockdown' rescued in Swansea Bay

A coastguard rescue team was dispatched after receiving reports of a paddle boarder in difficulty in Swansea Bay.

Emergency crews from Mumbles RNLI and Mumbles Coastguard were called after the lone boarder was spotted in the water on Tuesday (April 21).

Mumbles inshore lifeboat safely bought the boarder into shore.

According to the coastguard, they had no safety equipment, no paddle or radio and were relying on a small inflatable sail.

The boarder was visited by officers from South Wales Police after arriving at shore, while "suitable advice was given," according to a social media post from Mumbles Coastguard Rescue Team.

They said: "We were called out to reports of a paddle boarder in difficulty in Swansea Bay. Mumbles Inshore Lifeboat safely brought the person ashore and received by Coastguard and police officers.

"Suitable advice was given, especially as the person had no safety equipment, and should have observed the lockdown."

Police forces have been sharing the interesting and unusual excuses people have been making for being out when they shouldn't be.

Coronavirus: When police can stop you and if you can appeal fines

One person even told Gwent Police they had bought a new catapult and "wanted to try it out".

Police officers now have the power to hand out fines to people breaching the lockdown. Government guidelines say people should only leave the house for the following reasons:

  • infrequent shopping for essentials
  • one form of exercise a day
  • for a medical need or to care for the vulnerable
  • work if it cannot be done from home
