Paddington station fire: Major delays after blaze breaks out next to track

A blaze has erupted near London's Paddington Station causing major delays for rush hour commuters.

Passengers were stuck on trains for almost an hour as firefighters fought a blaze next to the tracks between Acton and Paddington.

National Rail warned that the 'major disruption' is leading to delays of up to 90 minutes for trains moving through Paddington.

A spokesman tweeted: "A fire next to the track between Acton Main Line and London Paddington is causing major disruption to trains running between these stations."

On its website, National Rail wrote: "The fire next to the track between Acton Main Line and London Paddington has now been extinguished, allowing line to reopen.

"However, while service returns to normal, trains to / from London Paddington may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until 10:00."

The following Great Western Railway routes are affected; Swansea, Hereford, Plymouth, Worcester Shrub Hill, Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Temple Meads, Oxford, Bedwyn, Frome, Weston-super-Mare, Didcot Parkway, Paignton, Newbury and Cardiff Central.

The fire stopped services at 6.41am, according to National Rail.

Firefighters discovered trackside equipment and cables were damaged near Canal Way, North Kensington, the Daily Mail reports.

Commuters complained that the delays had made them late for work.

One person wrote: "You know it's a good start to the week when all the trains from Paddington are cancelled."

Another said: "'Any idea what caused the fire? Disruption has caused my son to miss school."
