MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao's confidante and chief trainer Restituto "Buboy" Fernandez won as vice mayor of Albay town Polangui during the 2019 midterm elections.
Fernandez, who ran under PDP-Laban, won in a tight race with 19,895 votes against 17,711 votes garnered by closest competitor Renato Borja, who ran as an independent.
Another independent candidate, Dexter Salinel, placed 3rd with 1,777 votes.
Fernandez, who first served as Polangui councilor, has been Pacquiao's chief trainer since replacing legendary coach Freddie Roach mid-2018. He's helped the Filipino boxing icon win two bouts in sterling fashion.
With Fernandez as chief trainer, Pacquiao knocked out Lucas Matthysse to seize the World Boxing Association regular welterweight title before defending his belt in a dominant unanimous decision win over Adrien Broner.
Fernandez and Pacquiao go back to training camp as boxing's only eight-division world champion dangles his belt against Keith Thurman on July 20 (July 21 in the Philippines). – Rappler.com
