Pacos de Ferreira proved right about Tottenham win as Nuno Espirito Santo defends selection

Nuno Espirito Santo has suffered his first defeat as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

After the high of the 1-0 win over Manchester City last Sunday afternoon, came the somewhat low of a defeat by the same scoreline at the hands of Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday evening.

Lucas Silva netted the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time and there was to be no response from Spurs in the second half.

The good news for Espirito Santo is that there's a chance to salvage this Europa Conference League qualifying tie when they host the Portuguese side in north London next week.

However, Pacos de Ferreira will hold all the bragging rights before the second leg in six days time.

A goal for them at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will leave the Lilywhites needing to score at least twice to avoid the humiliation of not even making the Europa Conference League group stage.

With that said, Pacos de Ferreira have been proved right about facing Spurs - well at least the person in charge of their social media account has.

Ahead of the first-leg, a video was posted via the club's Twitter account in which they appeared to make light of drawing Spurs instead of one of the other London teams.

In the clip posted on the Portuguese club's official Twitter account last week after drawing Spurs, two supporters were shown reacting to the draw and the video finished with a tongue-in-cheek message: "we can easily win".

It should be noted that it was a much weakened Spurs team that Espirito Santo named as he gave starts to a number of the club's most promising players including Dane Scarlett and Nile John.

But after failing to net an away goal, it wouldn't be a surprise if the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura are recalled next week Thursday.

Speaking about his decision to rest a number of his first-team stars, the Spurs boss insisted he did not take Pacos de Ferreira lightly.

"We didn't underestimate them," Espirito Santo said in his post-match press conference.

"The decision was made and the main decision was to use all of the squad.

"As a team we were not organised enough and didn't play the ball quick enough."

Espirito Santo will be hoping for a reaction when Spurs travel to face his old side Wolves at Molineux on Sunday in the Premier League, before the second leg next week.
