There’s a chance Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari won’t have to play the 2020 season on the last year of his current contract.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Packers would “love” to get a new extension done with Bakhtiari, a four-time All-Pro, before the start of the regular season.
The season starts for the Packers on Sept. 13 against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers already completed a lucrative extension with defensive lineman Kenny Clark, who agreed to a four-year, $70 million deal on the first day of training camp practice. With Clark’s deal done, Bakhtiari is now the team’s top player without a contract extending past the 2020 season.
One of the NFL’s top left tackles, Bakhtiari is in line for a massive payday, whether it comes before Week 1 or not. A starter at left tackle since 2013, he’s played in 106 career games for the Packers and made four All-Pro teams and two Pro Bowls.
In September of 2016, the Packers and Bakhtiari agreed to a four-year extension. Another September extension would ensure the decorated left tackle remains in Green Bay for the long term.
