Packers tried to trade DL Mike Daniels before releasing him

The Green Bay Packers attempted to trade veteran defensive lineman Mike Daniels before deciding to release him Wednesday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed the Packers shopped Daniels to other NFL teams.

There were no takers.

Daniels’ combination of age, contract and recent injury history likely scared off teams from finalizing a deal with the Packers. Daniels turned 30 in May and was due a base salary of $7.6 million – with a total cap hit of $10.7 million – in 2019. He is also coming off a foot injury that ended his 2018 season prematurely.

Still, cutting Daniels couldn’t have been easy for the Packers. The former fourth-round pick is a fiery, emotional defender who worked hard to become a core player and Pro Bowler for the Packers defense.

Now, the Packers will part ways with Daniels without any compensation in return, other than freed up cap space.

Mike Pettine’s defense will move forward with Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Montravius Adams, Tyler Lancaster, rookie Kingsley Keke and several others along the defensive line.

Garafolo reports the Cleveland Browns will likely inquire about adding Daniels. Several other teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, could also be interested.
