Pick No. 30, originally from Saints, gets dealt twice on draft night

The Green Bay Packers made a trade up in the 2019 NFL Draft, shipping pick No. 30 and later selections to the Seattle Seahawks. They were able to jump up to pick No. 21 and select Maryland safety Darnell Savage. The Packers were only able to do so after receiving that No. 30 pick from the New Orleans Saints as part of the blockbuster trade last year that put pass rusher Marcus Davenport in black and gold.

Interestingly, the Packers also traded the other top pick they got from the Saints to the Seahawks: No. 27 in last year’s draft. The Packers used that pick and some other assets to move up to No. 18, landing cornerback Jaire Alexander. So they ended up getting two centerpieces of the secondary thanks to their dealings with the Saints and Seahawks.

The Seahawks have not used pick No. 30 yet, but last year they spent the former Saints pick (via the Packers) on running back Rashaad Penny, who logged just 85 rushing attempts in 14 regular-season games. That’s a lot of transactions to follow through, and just drives home how unpredictable the draft can be.

Update: The Seahawks traded pick No. 30 (via the Packers, who got it from the Saints) to the New York Giants, who exchanged No. 37, No. 132, and No. 142 for it. The Giants selected Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker with the pick.
