Packers to host top edge rusher Montez Sweat on official pre-draft visit

A star of the combine and one of the top edge rushers in the 2019 draft class will have an official pre-draft visit with the Green Bay Packers.

Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that he has a visit scheduled with the Packers in the near future.

Sweat (6-6, 260) posted 11.5 sacks and 14 tackles for losses as a senior in 2018. He impressed at the Senior Bowl and then blew up the combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds while also doing 21 reps on the bench press and finishing the three-cone drill in 7.0 seconds.

The Packers hold the 12th overall pick and would likely be tempted to use it on Sweat if he’s available. He could team with Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Kyler Fackrell to give the Packers a strong and deep edge-rushing group in Mike Pettine’s defense.

In his draft profile, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compared Sweat to Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter, noting the pair’s length, athleticism and potential coming out of the SEC.

All NFL teams are allowed to host 30 pre-draft visits. The Packers will likely use a good chunk of theirs to solidify the top of their draft board.
