Packers to host pre-draft visit with Boston College WR Jeff Smith

The Green Bay Packers will host an official pre-draft visit with Boston College receiver Jeff Smith this week, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Smith, a converted quarterback, caught 20 passes for 387 yards and six touchdowns over 12 games in 2018. He finished his collegiate career with 73 catches for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed 143 times for 906 yards and nine more scores and completed 34 passes for 404 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions.

Boston College transitioned Smith (6-0, 191) from quarterback to receiver in 2016.

Smith is a small but dynamic athlete who is terrific after the catch and ascending as a true receiver. He was also the holder for field goals. It’s very easy to scan Smith’s profile as an athlete and player and think of Randall Cobb, a converted college quarterback who became a dynamic slot receiver for the Packers.

According to Gil Brandt of NFL.com, Smith ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds, hit 36.5″ in the vertical and 10-7 in the broad jumps, did 15 reps on the bench press and finished the 3-cone drill in 6.87 seconds at Boston College’s pro day. He’s fast and explosive.

Smith is also expected to go on visits with the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans, and he’ll participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ local pro day.

If the Packers are truly interested in replacing Cobb, who signed in Dallas last month, Smith would likely represent a cheap option on the third day of the draft.
