Packers target Rodney Gunter re-signs with Cardinals

The Green Bay Packers won’t be adding young defensive lineman Rodney Gunter to Mike Pettine’s defense.

Despite a visit to Green Bay last week, Gunter has decided to re-sign with the Arizona Cardinals, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Gunter, who had 4.5 sacks with the Cardinals last season, signed a one-year deal to return to Arizona. The Cardinals originally drafted Gunter in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft.

A young, ascending player, Gunter looked like an ideal target for the Packers, who’ve already added Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith, Adrian Amos and Billy Turner in free agency.

Gunter played in all 64 games during his first four seasons. He started 10 games last season, emerging as a reliable and versatile interior defender.

The Packers still have the option of bringing back veteran Muhammad Wilkerson, who is recovering from ankle surgery. He remains a free agent.
