GREEN BAY, Wis. _ After a long day of waiting, the Green Bay Packers finally made their first selection of the 2017 NFL draft Friday evening.
With the 33rd overall selection _ the first pick of the second round _ general manager Ted Thompson selected cornerback Kevin King from Washington.
King, who stands 6-foot-3 and 198 pounds, fills an immediate need for the Packers following a season in which their pass defense ranked 31st. He is likely to contend for a starting spot immediately and challenge the likes of Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and newcomer Davon House.
The Packers obtained the 33rd pick in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday evening. Thompson, who entered the draft with the No. 29 overall pick, slid back four spots in exchange for an additional second-round pick and an additional fourth-round pick.
