Packers signing OLB Za’Darius Smith to 4-year, $66M deal

The numbers are in on Za’Darius Smith’s new deal with the Green Bay Packers, and they’re big.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Smith’s four-year deal is worth $66 million and will include $34.5 million paid out during the first two years.

The deal averages $16 million per season. It also includes a $20 million signing bonus.

Interest in Smith was high after he produced a breakout season in 2018. He tallied 8.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits and 10 tackles for losses over 16 games, proving his disruptive ability while playing in a rotation with Terrell Suggs and Matt Judon.

The Packers are paying Smith to be a difference-making player in Mike Pettine’s defense. Clearly, the Packers like Smith’s versatility as an edge rusher and interior disruptor in sub packages and were willing to pay handsomely to get it.

Together, Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith signed contracts worth $118 million, with $36 million in signing bonuses and $62 million paid out during the first two seasons. It’s a substantial investment in the outside linebacker group.
