Packers rule out LB Oren Burks, WR Darrius Shepherd for Week 1 vs. Bears

Only three players were given injury designations by the Green Bay Packers for Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, and two were unlikely to play anyway.

The Packers ruled out linebacker Oren Burks (partially torn pectoral muscle) and rookie receiver Darrius Shepherd (hamstring) for Thursday night and listed rookie cornerback Ka’dar Hollman (neck) as questionable. While Burks  is an expected starter, Shepherd and Hollman likely would have been inactive.

Some combination of rookie linebacker Ty Summers and safety/dime linebacker Raven Greene will fill in for Burks, who was injured in the preseason opener.

The Packers did not provide a status designation for 16 players on the injury report, meaning all 16 are expected to play. Even cornerback Kevin King, who has been limited in practice all week, and tight end Jimmy Graham, who has a finger injury, did not receive a status designation.

The Bears listed three players as questionable: tight end Trey Burton (groin), offensive lineman Rashaad Coward (elbow) and defensive tackle Bilal Nichols (knee). Burton, the team’s starter at tight end, is expected to be a game-time decision.
