Packers rookie S Darnell Savage makes training camp debut Wednesday

The long-awaited training camp debut for Green Bay Packers rookie safety Darnell Savage arrived Wednesday morning.

The 21st overall pick was in full pads to start practice at Ray Nitschke Field after a wisdom tooth extraction surgery held him out of the first five practices of training camp.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur sounded confident Tuesday that Savage was nearing a return. Now, Mike Pettine’s defense has its fast, playmaking safety back in action.

Despite being a rookie, Savage vaulted to the top of the depth chart and was a starter next to Adrian Amos at safety during the offseason workout program. Teammates and coaches both complimented the rookie on his talent and football intelligence, making it possible he’ll enjoy a seamless transition back into the lineup.

More than likely, the Packers will ease him back into the swing of camp.

Raven Greene, Josh Jones and Natrell Jamerson have all taken first-team snaps at Savage’s spot during the first five practices of camp.
