Packers releasing QB DeShone Kizer

Tim Boyle has beaten out DeShone Kizer to be the backup quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers for the Green Bay Packers.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Packers are releasing Kizer, who GM Brian Gutekunst acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns last year.

Boyle outplayed and outproduced Kizer during the preseason and leapfrogged the former second-round pick for the job, at least for the time being.

Acquiring Kizer was one of Gutekunst’s first major moves as Packers GM. He sent cornerback Damarious Randall to Cleveland to get Kizer, who was expected to give the Packers a talented developmental quarterback to sit and learn behind Rodgers.

Kizer played in three games for the Packers last season, completing 20 of 42 passes for 187 yards and two interceptions. He threw two more interceptions over four games this preseason.

Boyle, an undrafted free agent who also made the 53-man roster last season, threw an NFL-high six touchdown passes without an interception during the preseason.
