Packers Release Veteran Running Back Aaron Jones, Sign Josh Jacobs

Aaron Jones ranks third in Packers history in rushing yards.

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones ranks third in team history in rushing yards, behind only Ahman Green and Jim Taylor. However, the Packers have decided to release Jones in 2024 after signing Josh Jacobs from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jones, who restructured his contract last offseason, couldn't reach an agreement with the team this time around due to his high cap number. The Packers will save $11.9 million against the cap by releasing him.

Despite his release, Jones leaves a significant legacy with the Packers. He is the only player in NFL history to achieve over 5,000 rushing yards, 45 rushing touchdowns, an average of 5.0 yards per carry, 250 receptions, 2,000 receiving yards, and 15 receiving touchdowns in his first seven seasons in the league.

Known for his versatility and leadership both on and off the field, Jones was highly regarded by his teammates and coaches. Packers coach Matt LaFleur praised Jones for his work ethic, professionalism, and positive influence on the team.

In his final season with the Packers, Jones overcame early struggles to finish strong, recording five consecutive 100-yard games and leading the team to a playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Despite his impressive performance, the Packers opted to go with the younger and healthier option in Jacobs.

As Jones moves on to a new team in 2024, his impact on the Packers and the NFL will not be forgotten. His on-field production, leadership qualities, and community involvement have left a lasting impression on the organization and its fans.
