Packers release DL Anthony Rush to make room for new QB

The Green Bay Packers added a new quarterback to the roster on Thursday, necessitating a corresponding move.

The team released defensive lineman Anthony Rush to make room for quarterback Jake Dolegala on Thursday. Dolegala was at minicamp on a tryout basis but earned a roster spot after the three days.

With a full roster at 90 players, general manager Brian Gutekunst needed to make a move.

The Packers initially claimed Rush off of waivers from the Chicago Bears on Nov. 25 of last year. He was released in late December. The team signed him to a futures deal in January, providing him a spot on the initial offseason roster.

Rush played in one game with the Packers, seeing the field for one snap during a win over the Carolina Panthers in 2020.

The Packers were Rush’s fifth NFL team since going undrafted in 2019.

The Packers now have only seven defensive linemen on the roster, including rookies T.J. Slaton and Jack Heflin. Dolegala is the fifth quarterback, joining Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert.

It’s possible the Packers saw Rush as a redundant player after drafting Slaton in the fifth round of the 2021 draft.
