Packers’ Rashan Gary, Adrian Amos expected to avoid offseason surgery

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that he expects linebacker Rashan Gary and safety Adrian Amos to avoid offseason surgery on their respective injuries.

LaFleur answered questions about both players at Wednesday’s season-ending press conference.

Gary, the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, wore a brace on his right shoulder all year to support an injury he suffered his final season at the University of Michigan.

Amos, one of three defensive starters added by the Packers during free agency, injured his pectoral muscle during a tackle in the first half of the Packers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. He left the game and didn’t return.

LaFleur didn’t think Amos would require surgery but admitted he would need to check with the team’s training staff before knowing for sure.

If neither needs surgery, the Packers should have both players available for the start of offseason workouts.

Gary played limited snaps but finished with two sacks and three tackles for losses as a rotational rookie behind starters Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith. LaFleur said he needs to improve in specific areas, but a goal of the offseason will be finding ways to incorporate Gary into the scheme and get him on the field more often in 2020.

Amos will enter the second year of a four-year deal next season. He started all 16 games – and played 100 percent of the defense’s snaps in 15 games – during the 2019 season. He finished with two interceptions, eight pass breakups and 81 tackles.
