Packers placing rookie S Darnell Savage on non-football illness list

The Green Bay Packers will be without their standout rookie safety to begin training camp.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Packers are placing first-round pick Darnell Savage on the non-football illness list.

Rookies reported to training camp in Green Bay on Monday. All players go through a physical examination before the start of camp.

Per Yates, the issue isn’t serious and Savage is expected to be available to return to the field “within a few days.” The Packers begin practice on Thursday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also labeled the issue as a “very minor situation.”

Savage is eligible to be removed from the list at any time.

The Packers traded up in the first round to take Savage with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 draft. The top defensive back selected, Savage immediately earned a spot as a starter on the Packers defense.

Veterans report to training camp on Wednesday and the Packers begin practice on Thursday morning at 10:15 a.m.
