Packers place rookie TE Jace Sternberger on injured reserve

The ankle injury suffered by Green Bay Packers rookie Jace Sternberger in the preseason finale has landed the first-year tight end on injured reserve just two days before the start of the 2019 regular season.

Tuesday’s transaction wire showed Sternberger’s placement on injured reserve.

The rookie caught a touchdown pass against the Kansas City Chiefs last Thursday night but left the contest with an ankle injury. He made the 53-man roster on Saturday but will now go on injured reserve.

Sternberger will be eligible to come off the list in eight weeks if the Packers want to designate him for return. If not, the rookie’s season will be over before it ever started.

The Packers used the 75th overall pick on Sternberger, who caught 10 touchdown passes at Texas A&M last season. He suffered a concussion and jaw injury during the team’s joint practices with the Houston Texans and missed three weeks of training camp and the preseason.

The Packers will have a roster spot to fill before Thursday night’s season opener against the Chicago Bears.
