Packers place Equanimeous St. Brown on season-ending IR

Despite optimism that his ankle injury wasn’t as serious as originally believed, the Green Bay Packers still placed second-year receiver Equanimeous St. Brown on injured reserve as they trimmed their roster to 53 players on Saturday.

The decision means St. Brown’s season is over. Had he been on the first roster Saturday and then placed on injured reserve Sunday, St. Brown could have been eligible to return from the ankle injury he suffered against the Oakland Raiders in Winnipeg.

Not now. St. Brown is out for the entire season.

The Packers kept Jake Kumerow, Trevor Davis and Darrius Shepherd at receiver behind starters Davante Adams, Geronimo Allison and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Many expected the Packers would include St. Brown on the initial roster, place him on IR Sunday and replace him with either Shepherd or Allen Lazard, who was waived. With two designations for return available, St. Brown could have come back after eight weeks.

The 2019 season will have to serve as a redshirt year for the sixth-round pick from Notre Dame.

As a rookie in 2018, St. Brown caught 21 passes for 328 yards, with five catches over 20 yards.
