The Green Bay Packers made a surprise move Saturday, releasing cornerback Tony Brown one day before the season finale against the Detroit Lions.
The Packers didn’t include a corresponding roster move, meaning they’ll have an open spot on the 53-man roster.
Brown, a training camp and preseason standout, played in just nine games for the Packers in 2019. He hasn’t played in a game since Nov. 24 and was recently a healthy scratch for Monday night’s win over the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers are deep at cornerback, with Chandon Sullivan, Josh Jackson and rookie Ka’dar Hollman behind starters Jaire Alexander, Kevin King and Tramon Williams.
It’s possible GM Brian Gutekunst wants to add a player at a different position, such as a running back or fullback, before Sunday’s season finale against the Detroit Lions.
Over 20 games and three starts the last two seasons, Brown produced 44 tackles, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one tackle for loss. He played mostly special teams for the Packers in 2019.
