More detailed testing is required, but the Green Bay Packers believe outside linebacker Rashan Gary might have avoided what could have been a season-ending elbow injury.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, initial evaluations of Gary’s hyperextended right elbow revealed no break or ligament damage.
Gary, who leads the team with 5.5 sacks and 19 quarterback hits, injured his elbow while trying to make a tackle in the second half of the Packers’ 17-0 win over the Seattle Seahawks. As he twisted down, his right elbow buckled under the weight of the runner on top of his arm.
Gary was examined in the medical tent on the sideline before exiting the game for good.
The optics of the injury were unsettling but Gary could return this season if his elbow is structurally intact. However, it’s unclear what kind of timeline Gary could be facing even if the worst-case scenario has been avoided.
Second-year edge rusher Jonathan Garvin would assume a much bigger role opposite Preston Smith in upcoming games if Gary has to miss time.
The Packers also lost veteran edge rusher Whitney Mercilus to a biceps injury. He was injured while attempting to sack Russell Wilson in the first half on Sunday. There are currently no reported updates on the severity of his injury.
