Packers intend to sign Redskins edge rusher Preston Smith

The Green Bay Packers are adding edge rusher Preston Smith to a free-agent haul that already includes edge rusher Za’Darius Smith and safety Adrian Amos.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers intend to sign Smith, who tallied 24.5 sacks, 59 quarterback hits and 29 tackles for loss during his first four NFL seasons in Washington.

The 26-year-old edge rusher has played in all 64 games since entering the NFL as a second-round pick in 2015. He started all 16 games for the Redskins for the third straight season in 2018.

Despite only producing four sacks last season, Smith was likely at his best in 2018. According to Pro Football Focus, he produced over 50 pressures and 20 run stops as a full-time player in 2018.

The Packers have now completely revamped their outside linebacker group in one morning. Expect the team to eventually release Nick Perry, who is due a $4.8 million roster bonus later this week.
