Packers hosting pre-draft visit with Missouri QB Drew Lock

The Green Bay Packers will be holding an official pre-draft visit with Missouri quarterback Drew Lock on Tuesday, according to Terez Paylor of The Athletic.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports also reported the visit.

A three-year starter at Missouri, Lock completed 883 of 1,553 attempts for 12,193 yards, 99 touchdowns and 39 interceptions at Missouri. He completed a career high 62.9 percent of his passes as a senior.

His best statistical season came in 2017 when he averaged 9.5 yards per attempt and threw 44 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

Lock stands 6-4 and is 228 pounds. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compared him to Detroit Lions starter Matthew Stafford and said he has “as much pure talent” as any quarterback in the class.

“Full-field reader offering prototypical size and arm talent, but one that has a concerning lack of accuracy and consistency against top opponents,” Zierlein wrote. “Inside of each game, Lock makes reads and throws that are worthy of an early pick. There will also be plays in the same game that highlight his random inaccuracy and issues defeating pocket pressure.”

The Packers could view Lock as the kind of developmental quarterback required behind Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 36 years old in December. While it may take a first-round pick to get Lock, GM Brian Gutekunst has a pair of first-rounders after executing a trade with the New Orleans Saints during last year’s draft and could be tempted to secure a more stable future behind Rodgers at quarterback.

In 2005, the Packers shocked the football world by drafting Rodgers in the first round with Brett Favre still on the roster. The two situations aren’t perfectly synonymous – Favre had already been waffling on retirement, and Rodgers is still playing at a very high level – but it’s something to think about as the Packers approach an increasingly important draft.

Lock is widely considered a first-round pick, with some believing he’ll be off the board in the first 10 picks.
