Packers finish 26th in Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings in 2019

The Green Bay Packers improved under special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga in 2019 but still ranked among the NFL’s worst on special teams.

The Packers finished 26th in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings this season. Last season, the Packers ranked dead last in the league under former coordinator Ron Zook, who wasn’t retained by new head coach Matt LaFleur.

The Packers ranked last in the NFL in punt return average (4.5 yards) but finished in the top five in field goal percentage (95.0, third) and penalties (13 for 95 yards, fourth).

Under Mennenga, the Packers improved substantially in discipline on special teams, going from one of the most penalized teams in 2018 to one of the fewest in 2019.

The Packers also got a near-perfect season from veteran kicker Mason Crosby, who made 22-of-24 field goals and 40-of-41 extra points during the regular season.

Late-season addition Tyler Ervin stabilized the return units and kept the Packers from making NFL history for the fewest number of punt return yards in a single season.

Here are the Packers’ special teams rankings by year since 2012:

2019: 26th
2018: 32nd
2017: 16th
2016: 29th
2015: 17th
2014: 32nd
2013: 20th
2012: 12th
