Packers decided to be ‘cautious’ with CB Kevin King vs. Chargers

Green Bay Packers cornerback Kevin King played only 20 of the 71 defensive snaps on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Coach Matt LaFleur said the team was being careful with King, who was listed on the injury report with a groin injury but practiced in full all week.

“It was, more or less, we were being cautious with him,” LaFleur said Monday.

King and Tony Brown rotated in and out. With King on a pitch count, Brown ended up playing 19 snaps on the perimeter. Chandon Sullivan was on the field for 36 snaps, often as a slot cornerback.

Even with limited snaps, King showed up. He nearly intercepted a Philip Rivers pass and later dropped Austin Ekeler in the open field for no gain on a run play.

According to Pro Football Focus, King produced the highest overall grade on the Packers’ defense.

He also came out of the game without re-aggravating his groin injury.

Despite dealing with significant injuries each of his first two seasons, King has played in all nine games for the Packers in 2019, including six games that King played 75 percent or more of the defense’s snaps. His 20 snaps against the Chargers were a new season-low.
