Packers claim TE Michael Roberts off waivers from Lions

The Green Bay Packers claimed tight end Michael Roberts off waivers from the Detroit Lions, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM.

Roberts, a fourth-round pick of the Lions in 2017, was originally traded to the New England Patriots on June 13, but the trade was canceled after Roberts failed a physical in New England. The Lions immediately waived him.

Over 23 games and five starts the last two seasons, Roberts (6-5, 265) caught 13 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

He hauled in nine of 20 targets for 100 yards and all three scores in 2018. A shoulder injury landed Roberts on injured reserve to end last season.

In Green Bay, Roberts will join Jimmy Graham, Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan, third-round pick Jace Sternberger, Evan Baylis and Pharoah McKever in the Packers’ tight end room. It’s a crowded position, but GM Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur are clearly interested in adding more competition.
