The Green Bay Packers are adding an H-back to the roster.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Packers claimed John Lovett off of waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.
Lovett, who the Chiefs listed as a tight end, was a quarterback and a do-it-all weapon during college at Princeton, where he was the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in both 2016 and 2018. Lovett had an official pre-draft visit with the Packers before last year’s draft but later signed with the Chiefs after going undrafted.
As a rookie, Lovett injured his shoulder during the preseason and spent the entire 2020 season on injured reserve.
Matt LaFleur and the Packers will almost certainly attempt to use him in an H-back role, or as a hybrid player between tight end and fullback. It’s possible Lovett could challenge for a roster spot in the Danny Vitale role.
From Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst: “Lovett is a terrific athlete but was a marginal quarterback at the small-school level. He has the size and ability to transition to the tight end position and is worth a spot on a practice squad this fall.”
Lovett will have to pass a physical with the Packers before being added to the official roster.
