Packers claim former Seahawks, Rams K Sam Ficken

Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby may have some competition this offseason.

The Packers claimed kicker Sam Ficken off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, the team announced Monday.

Ficken signed a futures contract with the Seahawks in January. He was released by the team this past Saturday, April 13.

Ficken spent time with the Los Angeles Rams in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He made 2-of-3 field goals and 4-of-5 extra points in 2017 and then connected on 1-of-3 field goals and all 10 extra points before being cut in 2018. He also handled kickoff duties for the Rams in the four games between the two seasons.

An undrafted free agent out of Penn State, Ficken participated in the Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp in 2015 and was later signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars for training camp. He latched on with the Rams in 2017 after kicker Greg Zuerlein went down with an injury.

Ficken set the school record at Penn State for most consecutive field goals made (15). He made several clutch kicks, including the game-winner against Wisconsin in 2012.

Ficken could provide the Packers with competition this offseason for Crosby, who missed seven kicks and two extra points last season. The veteran kicker turns 35 in September and is entering the final year of his contract in 2019.
