Packers claim CB Derrick Jones off waivers from Jets

The Green Bay Packers are adding another cornerback to the mix.

GM Brian Gutekunst claimed Derrick Jones off of waivers from the New York Jets, the team announced Sunday.

Jones, a sixth-round pick of the Jets in 2017, was waived Saturday, two days after allowing a long completion during the Jets’ preseason-opening loss to the New York Giants.

Jones saw action in four regular-season games over the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Jones, who played receiver before switching to cornerback for his senior season at Ole Miss, has terrific length (6-2) and leaping ability (41″ vertical). He’ll enter a deep cornerback room in Green Bay that is already flush with competition, especially at the top of the depth chart.

The Packers roster is now at 89 players, meaning they still have one more roster spot to fill – potentially with an inside linebacker or fullback.
