Packers bring in 10 players for tryouts, including speedy LB Gary Johnson

Former Texas linebacker Gary Johnson was among the 10 players the Green Bay Packers had in for tryouts and workouts on Monday, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Johnson, a two-year starter for the Longhorns, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds – the second-fastest among linebackers – at the combine in February. The 226-pounder went undrafted but spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins this summer.

Other tryouts in Green Bay on Monday, per Demovsky: linebacker Joey Alfieri, receiver Trinity Benson, tight end Scott Orndoff, linebacker Gimel President, guard Malcolm Pridgeon, defensive tackle Cory Thomas, running back Johnathan Thomas, nose tackle Jay-Tee Tiuli and quarterback Phillip Walker.

The Packers hosted a pre-draft workout for Walker, a dual-threat quarterback from Temple, before the 2017 draft. He’s been in and out of the Indianapolis Colts organization for the last three years.

The Packers are likely attempting to fill the team’s last spot on the practice squad, which was vacated by Allen Lazard’s promotion to the active roster last week. Teams are also active this time of year researching available players in case of injury or need.
