Packers bring back Tremon Smith, release WR Darrius Shepherd and TE Evan Baylis

The Green Bay Packers made three different roster moves Tuesday.

The team announced the promotion of returner and cornerback Tremon Smith from the practice squad and the release of receiver Darrius Shepherd and tight end Evan Baylis.

Smith, who was originally claimed off waivers by the Packers on Sept. 17, played three games for Green Bay before being released. He figures to reassume duties at kick returner and possibly punt returner.

Shepherd, who was demoted off of kick returns and also struggled on punt returns, lost his spot on the 53-man roster after spending the first eight weeks with the team. He caught one pass for one yard but dropped a pass resulting in an interception and lost a fumble on a punt return.

Shepherd, a tryout player who made the roster after a strong summer, returned two punts for -9 yards and nine kickoffs for 147 yards (16.3 yards per return).

It’s possible Shepherd could return on the practice squad.

The Packers also released Baylis, opening up a potential roster spot for either tight end Jace Sternberger or safety Ibraheim Campbell. Sternberger was designated for return off injured reserve while Campbell is eligible to come off the PUP list.
